Creative Interview | Ginger Rose

We have the privilege of working alongside the most talented vendors. We’ve chosen to begin a Creative Interview series highlighting the incredible professionals we’ve come to know and love through our last decade in the wedding and private events industry.

It's no secret that we've always been in awe of our floral-arranging friends, and Alyssa Ice of Ginger Rose is no exception. This botanical beauty is a triple threat: floral designer, shop gal, and mama to her sweet little girl. We have asked Alyssa to dish some advice on trends, big floral moments, texture, and neutrals. Here's what she had to say.

How do you make one event with a "neutral" color palette different from everything else that's out there?

Usually when a client requests a neutral color palette, they are initially envisioning "whites and greens" because that is what is mostly seen in magazines and on Pinterest when you search for events with a "neutral" color palette. While whites and greens can be beautiful on their own, I really try to encourage my clients to think outside the box and add some transitional shades into the mix which will help to create visual interest and depth into each of our designs. For example, we can incorporate touches of complementary neutral shades like butter yellows, tans, browns, soft peaches, grays, terra cotta, etc...into a white and green color story, and still have the overall design read as "neutral." These subtle additions of color will instantly set your event apart from every other event out there, and will provide a stunning end result that will have a unique and timeless feel overall!

What are your favorite ways to incorporate texture?

Texture is the study of visual contrasts, and it's one of my favorite things to work with as a floral designer! When I begin the process of ordering flowers for our events, I always make sure to order at least three different textural elements to use in our flower recipes to help add visual interest into our designs! There are many ways to incorporate texture throughout your designs, however, some of my favorite textural elements are blooms such as Pincushion Protea, Sweet Pea, Fringe Tulips, Pieris, Lilac, Kangaroo Paw, berries, etc...and foliages such as Mimosa, Geranium, Rex Begonia, Spirea, Dried Grasses, etc...! Putting some of these different textures together is the most fun way to add visual interest and movement into your arrangements, and I have often been told that it's easy to spot a Ginger Rose bouquet because of all the texture and contrast we incorporate into our designs!

If a client wants to splurge in one area of a wedding, what would make the most impact: ceremony installation, personal flowers, head table, somewhere else?

One of the most important areas to splurge for your wedding florals in my opinion is to create a signature "wow" moment/ floral installation within your event...whether this is a hanging installation above the dance floor, a flower meadow for your ceremony, or a jaw-dropping head table design that is full of seasonal blooms, I encourage you to work closely with your florist to create at least one unique flower installation for your event that you and your guests will be talking about for months after because it was so special!
